Privacy Policy for Swap

Swap ("we", "our", "the app") is a textbook exchange app for students. This policy explains what information we collect, why, and how it's handled.

Information we collect

• Account information: email address, username, display name, and password (stored in hashed form — we never store your plain-text password).
• School affiliation: derived from your email domain, used to connect you with students at your school.
• Profile information: optional profile photo, and your rating/swap history built from completed transactions.
• Book listings: title, author, condition, and photos of books you list for swap.
• Location: optional approximate location/coordinates, only if you choose to add one, used to help nearby students find your listings.
• Camera access: used only when you actively choose to take a photo of a book or scan a QR code to confirm a swap in person. We do not access the camera in the background.
• Messages and transactions: in-app messages between users arranging a swap, and records of point transfers and completed transactions.

How we use this information

• To operate core app features: listing books, matching swaps, messaging, and confirming exchanges via QR code.
• To maintain your point balance and swap/rating history.
• To keep the platform limited to verified students at participating schools.

What we don't do

• We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
• We do not use your camera or location for tracking or advertising.

Data storage and sharing

Your data is stored on our servers and is only shared with other users as needed for the app to function — for example, your display name, rating, and listings are visible to other students so they can arrange swaps with you. Photos you upload (profile and book photos) are stored on our servers to display within the app.

Data retention and deletion

We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. You can delete your account and associated data at any time — see how to delete your account.

Children's privacy

Swap is intended for students of at least middle/high-school age and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date.
